If your plants are coming with you to Oregon.
Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) has outlined how to move your plants into Oregon in a way that allows you to help protect the safety and well-being of Oregon’s environmental and economic health. Below is a list of ODA guidelines for bringing plants to Oregon.
Up to 5 plants per household can be brought into Oregon
Plants must be healthy - no signs of disease or pest damage
Outdoor plants must be turned into indoor potted plants permanently
Plants must not be noxious weeds or restricted plants
Plants must be free of egg masses and other visible signs of pests and diseases
See here for lists of noxious weeds and restricted plants
Please contact the ODA Plant Program at 503-986-4786 if you are unsure of the status of any of your plants
Visit the State of Oregon: Shipping Plant Material - Moving Houseplants page for full details.
The safest option is to leave your plants in their home state.
It’s easiest on you and your plants to leave them in their current home. Save yourself the hassle of moving plants (spilled soil, leaking water, torn or broken plants), and save your new home state the risks of unintentional pest introduction!
Plants in need of re-homing make great gifts for friends and family members that remain in your home state, as they can provide a special reminder of you for them once you have moved away (provided that they are not noxious weeds in your home state).
Once you are in Oregon, you will have access to the bountiful options for obtaining the perfect plants for your new home. Oregon has a thriving nursery industry, so you’ll be sure to find what you’re looking for here. Whether you want to create a rich habitat for the local wildlife using native flora, or an exotic and ornamental paradise, Oregon’s nurseries can supply you with whatever plants you need to make your vision for your new home come true.
Visit Plant Native Oregon to find a list of locations that supply native plants, seeds, and more! Select a region in Oregon and check the legend for the type of supplier you are looking for to get started.

Before bringing a houseplant to Oregon, visit the National Plant Board’s website to review Oregon’s Summary of Exterior Quarantine to determine if it is allowed. (Helpful tips: control+F “OR” finds the Oregon pdf on the web page; in the pdf, try control+F “your plant species”).
If you do not know the species of your plants, please attempt to identify your plant’s species by comparing visual and other plant traits with information from a reputable source. If you are still unsure, contact the Oregon Dept. of Agriculture Plant Program at 503-986-4636.
Please note: These lists do not substitute the mandatory USDA APHIS spongy moth checklist. If you are moving from a location within the spongy moth quarantine area to a location outside the quarantine area, you must inspect your outdoor household items for spongy moth and remove all life stages of this destructive insect before you move. You and your moving company may face penalties if you are required to inspect but fail to do so. Not sure if you are located in a spongy moth quarantine area? Visit the Your Move Spongy Moth Free webpage to find out.
