Own a boat? Remember to Clean, Drain, and Dry!

When drying your boat, you can calculate the amount of time you need to let it dry by using the 100th Meridian Initiative’s drying time calculator.

Checking often is important.

Always remembering to clean your vehicles before leaving the site of a boat trip or weekend of motorcycling is an excellent practice and is very important to preventing invasive species transport.

Even if you hire a moving company, you are still responsible.

Many people hire a company to help with their move. A moving company may be legally required to check for some invasive species (dependent upon your area), but you are ultimately responsible.

It is also important to remember that moving companies will not go through the belongings that you place inside a storage unit. For this reason, you should also remember to check for invasive species on any items that you place in a storage unit prior to transport.

With this in mind however, you should still check your vehicles again before you move to a new state. Somewhere between your last outing and when you load up your vehicles there is likely to have been the opportunity for a species to find its way onto your vehicles. If you don’t check your vehicles again before you move then you could end up bringing along a problematic species to your new home.

There are a few different areas on a vehicle where a life stage of an invasive species could go unnoticed. You can prevent transporting invasive species by establishing the habit of checking and cleaning your vehicle at important times. Important times to check your vehicle include long-distance travel, off-road recreation, and moving to a new area.

Please note: These lists do not substitute the mandatory USDA APHIS spongy moth checklist. If you are moving from a location within the spongy moth quarantine area to a location outside the quarantine area, you must inspect your outdoor household items for spongy moth and remove all life stages of this destructive insect before you move. You and your moving company may face penalties if you are required to inspect but fail to do so. Not sure if you are located in a spongy moth quarantine area?
